PHP, HTML, RoR, MYSQL, AJAX
Can I use enough TLA’s (Three Letter Acronyms?)… So I’ve been on a bit of a mission to get a system, that I envisage developed, operational, and up and running…
Since having that vision, it’s now been over two years, and many conversations with many interested individuals… However, on a practical level, it hasn’t yet materialized… Perhaps, partly because I’ve not yet been ready to dive headfirst, straight in, with everything I’ve got.
I guess now I am… So I’ve been studying RoR – Ruby on Rails, and been working with the “textbook” in order to become proficient in the language, and gain enough of a basic foundation, to be able to start developing my own killer app, and start down that road…
But as I work my way through the tutorials, and learn the language, I’ve been getting increasingly distracted by whether or not I’ve got enough of a foundation in all the other wonderful pieces of the jigsaw puzzle…
So now, having been sufficiently distracted, I’ve decided to start with HTML, get a foundation in that, then move on XML, and AJAX, then, focus on MYSQL and PHP, before diving back into RoR… I figure, that way, I should have enough of an all round education in the basic web technologies, and have learnt enough along the way, to be able to start piecing together some of the pieces of the bigger picture, of the system I want to implement.
Of course, in an ideal world, I’d just find some investors, and find some programmers to get stuck in, but looking at how things develop in the real world, perhaps it is better to bootstrap with what I can, and then look to people I know to get the project off the ground, once funding comes into the equation – after all, how hard can it be to build an online collaborative addressbook??
Surely it can’t be that hard can it?
Well, we’ll find out, shan’t we?? First things first though, lets get clear on our HTML, CSS, and XML.. (for those of you who don’t know what they are, they are HyperText Markup Language (HTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and eXtensible Markup Language (XML)… some good foundations of all good web technologies, require these key pieces… ) I did think to perhaps start with Lazy Soft’s Enterprise Edition Sentences product, which when I first came across it, seemed to be a really smart step forward for online development, back in 2001… and having looked at it, I just don’t feel drawn to it, if I’m truthful as the development environment which I’d like to start my deployment in… So, I’ve decided to put that on hold for now, and then perhaps later down the line, once I have something up and running, I’ll see if I want to use something like that…
I’ve also been intrigued by the OpenLaszlo development Platform, which looks like it makes it easier to make flashier looking web pages, and seems like a really cool platform to develop with…
But perhaps, I need to start back at the basics, and get some core HTML under my belt first… Look forward to seeing how this learning and education starts to shape the system I’m developing and building…
One step at a time I guess!! So HTML it is! At least, I’ll be able to PhotoRead the book I’ll be working with, to save myself some of the learning curve I’ll be going through… Perhaps by next weeknd, I’ll have completed all of the reading and learning… here’s hoping!
