Facebook being criticised for living inside a silo…
It’s started… The undeniable need for social networks to be open, and available for everyone to use has started to percolate to even the community of wired.com. Scott Gilbertson, in his article, Slap in the Facebook has addressed an issue that has been very present to the world of non-profits, and commercial organisations for a long time.. Connecting relationship information outside of the platform where that information is stored… As a volunteer at The Pachamama Alliance for 8 months spanning 06 and 07, I was very aware of the challenges that are faced when taking information about people, and using it anywhere publicly – like for example, being able to give access to groups of facilitators of symposiums, access to specific areas of the website… Especially when the website is managed by Joomla (a CMS), which is completely disconnected from the Communications platform being used Democracy in Action. It seems that now that social networking is starting to take off, people are starting to really appreciate how valuable the “relationships” between people are…. as opposed to what actually gets shared…
I believe that the future of the web lies not in the indexes of information, but in the indexes of the relationships, which will lead to being able to find relevant information, at arms length, in anything, anywhere, at any time…
That well used phrase comes to mind, when talking about success, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know…” which for me, is completely what the internet is about to become… Watch this space for more information, as we start to take the internet and launch it into the mechanism for collaboration whose potential is sorely lacking at present…
